Mokalbari tea estate is nestled on the southern banks of the Brahmaputra River in Upper Assam. The estate’s name is derived from the words “MOKAL” and “BARI,” with“MOKAL” referring to a unique variety of tall, thick-stemmed bamboos,and “BARI” meaning a specific location or garden. This lush region’s history dates back to the late 19th century when a British planter discovered that the area’s abundant sandy loam soil, deposited by the Brahmaputra River, was perfect for cultivating tea.

Established in 1876, Mokalbari tea estate began its journey by replacing the tall bamboo groves with tea plants, quickly becoming a significant producer of high-quality Assam Orthodox and CTC teas. The estatespans an impressive 1,022 hectares, producing 2 million kilograms of tea annually. With two state-of-the-art factories, Mokalbari has the capacity to produce 2.5 million kilograms of tea each year, supported by a dedicated workforce of 1,600 skilled laborers.

The Kanoi family, who took over the estate in the early 20th century, has meticulously nurtured Mokalbari to its current status as one of India’s finest tea estates. Renowned for its exquisite Tippy Golden teas, the estate’s unique tea bushes produce green leaves essential for creating these premium teas.Mokalbari’s teas are renowned for their quality, forming the base of top East Frisian blends, and exemplifying the rich, characteristic flavors of Assam’s finest teas.
